If you would rather drive than be driven, a dune buggy or quad-bike session puts you behind the wheel in the red dunes. Can-Am and Polaris buggies take two people side by side, while quads (ATVs) are single-rider. Sessions run from 30 minutes to a couple of hours with a guide leading the convoy, and most packages add sandboarding, a camel ride and transfers from your building.

Good to know

• You need to be 16+ to drive most buggies (18+ for some); younger children ride as passengers
• A licence is usually not needed for quads, but bring photo ID
• Goggles and a scarf are provided; wear long trousers
• Morning sessions are cooler and the sand is firmer
